  • Would that be a Continental motor? I have an old Red seal with a Continental motor.

  • After several years of following YT info and pictures this is the first time I have seen the name Hopto. We bought a Hopto digger in New Zealand in 1951. It was mounted on two rubber tyred wheels and towed by a tractor. The power the rams was delivered by two hydraulic pumps driven by the tractor PTO. One pump was dedicated to the swing rams. I think the swing pump was a piston pump whereas the digging rams were supplied by a fairly large vane pump. The operator stood on a platform beside you 20 gallon oil tank and used a bank of three double acting control valves. With two buckets it could be used as either a trench digger or a face shovel. It's drawback was being too light and a bucket-full of dirt when swung to the side was enough to tip it over (it did!). Our later modification was to replace the rubber wheels woth Bren gun Carrier tracks. They gave all the weight needed plus better flotation on soft ground, and worked a treat. Tho name Hopto was explained in the manual as acronym for "Hydraulically Operated Power Take Off". The operated had to get off the machine and mount the tractor to move every few feet. All might seem a bit of a hassle, but one must remember this was in the days of the alternative was mostly expensive, heavy rope-operated draglines eg Ruston Bucyrus 10 RB. These machines soon arrived on the market mounted on the rear of tractors. eg Case 580(?) backhoes. Anybody else remember those Hopto diggers???

  • Good Morning Just chanced upon your post. Been a long time since I've run across the HOPTO name. We had a HOPTO hoe throughout most of the 1950's. Unit was mounted on a 1946 REO truck chassis. Backhoe was powered by its own Red Seal (Continental) gas fueled engine of about 60 hp. Ours did not have a cab. Was a very powerful unit for the era. I spent many days and hours trenching and anything else with that machine. Sold it to a gravel truck operator and several years later it disappeared from our community. Thanks Doug Strathroy Ont. Can.
